Sports, music, dramatics, journalism and leadership affiliations – these are myriad activities that most college students get involved to. As they say, college is definitely the right place to hone skills and discover latent talent. To produce the most positive classroom environment possible, students must consider not onlywhat happens inside the class, but also everything that affects students throughout the campus. Involvement in extracurricular activities is a significant ingredient in this recipe. And it proved me right!
Students’ involvement in extracurricular activities will lift one’s ability for personal development. To mingle with somebody or to become part of a group fuels self-confidence and creates better motivation for school. Due to the fact that people will spend some time on extracurricular activities in addition to school works, as a result, students will feel motivated, emotionally better and ready to take challenge of studying a variety of different subjects in school. As it has already been mentioned, it also has a host of benefits in gaining confidence, as well as giving us an opportunity to learn skills that may be useful as we further our education or enter the workforce.
Extracurricular activities help us students improve social interactions. We can explore our physical, creative, social, political and career topics with like-minded people. We get to spend time with them who share a common interest, whether it’s a favorite sport or intellectual endeavors. At the same time, we interact with people who are different from us. Organizations may be composed of people from different ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds. By interacting with people who are different, students may dispel prejudices and stereotypes they may have had.
It is also a stepping stone to learn new things. This is a great chance to fulfill students in other spheres. There are numerous cases when students’ interest converted into their professional occupation.
Many extracurricular activities emphasize the significance of time. Participating in extracurricular activities helps teach students the skill to juggle homework, school, family life and after-school activites. Simultaneously, students learn the value of prioritizing and planning.
Teamwork is an important life skill both in home life and at work. Various group activities require students to work together to achieve a common objective and remove the focus from the individual to the team. Respect for coaches, teachers, leaders and peers can also be developed through group activities.
Extracurricular activities are not only fun-filled and entertaining, but it helps in teaching important life skills and helps us to be responsible and grow up as well-balanced adults.
Inspite of the advantages mentioned, extracurricular activities also have disadvantages. Balancing school work with extracurricular activities can also be stressful, especially when an abundance of activities takes place while there’s a need to study for an exam or maybe complete the requirements since deadline is fast approaching.
Utmost participation on such organizations, various clubs, talent managements, athletics and many other activities which are not a direct part of the schools’ curriculum, might affect academic performance. Some students are so involved in outclass activities that they tend to forget about the necessity of their academic studies. Consequently, it may influence their grades.
Therefore, one must properly weigh his/her priorities in life. From the word itself, extracurricular must be treated as an “extra” event for students. Education must be the topmost antecedence that we should store in our minds.
But it depends upon the student on how he/she deals with balancing his/her academic performance and extracurricular activities. A good student must know how to manage his/her time effectively and if you have what it takes, then I must encourage you to take an interest in extracurricular activities which are different from your studies in order to create a better-adjusted and motivated society.
